Chuck Hadley has been a General Partner at Cardinal Partners since 2006. Chuck began his venture capital career with Hillman Medical Ventures, an early stage medical technology fund, which he co-founded in 1988. He led that firm's medical device sector investing. He was the founding investor in Ultracision (acquired by Johnson & Johnson) and led the firm's investments in several other device and diagnostics companies, including Cytyc (NADSDAQ:CYTC), Dynamic Digital Displays (acquired by Picker International), FiberOptic Sensors (acquired by C.R. Bard) and Endius (acquired by Zimmer Holdings). In 1997, Chuck founded Rock Hill Ventures. There he founded several medical technology companies, including Talaria Therapeutics (acquired by Esperion Therapeutics/Pfizer-NYSE:PFE), Transport Pharmaceuticals, and Replication Medical, and he led an investment round in and served on the Board of Proxima Therapeutics (acquired by Cytyc – NASDAQ:CYTC). Chuck currently serves as Chairman of Transport Pharmaceuticals and Chairman of Replication Medical. He is also a member of the board of directors of Bioconnect Systems and FluidNet.
Dennis I. Goldberg, Ph.D.
President and CEO, Transport Pharmaceuticals
Dr. Goldberg has more than 20 years of experience in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, ranging from drug discovery at a Fortune 25 company to chief executive officer of “virtual” biotechnology companies. Dr. Goldberg is president, chief executive officer and founder of neXus therapeutics, inc. He was president, chief executive officer and director of BZL Biologics, a company developing monoclonal antibodies against Prostate Specific Membrane Antigen (PSMA) for the treatment of prostate and other types of cancer. The BZL antibody technology was licensed by Millennium Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:MLNM). Dr. Goldberg was president, chief executive officer, and co-founder of Talaria Therapeutics where he headed the team that took the Large Unilamellar Vesicle (LUV) technology into clinical development. Talaria Therapeutics was acquired by Esperion Therapeutics (NASDAQ:ESPR) in a stock and cash transaction less than two years after its formation. Dr. Goldberg was vice president of product development and regulatory affairs at GelTex Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ:GELX), where he was responsible for all biological and clinical development activities at the company, leading to the approval of RenaGel® and WelChol®. He was co-founder of Transcend Therapeutics, as well as vice president of research and development at Clintec Nutrition Co. He also led the Atherosclerosis Research Program at Pfizer Central Research. Dr. Goldberg holds a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biochemistry from Temple University and received post doctoral training in the Department of Physiology, University of Pennsylvania and at the Specialized Center of Research on Atherosclerosis, University of California, San Diego. He has published extensively in basic and clinical sciences and is the inventor on nine U.S. patents.
Russell W. Ayres, III
Vice President and Associate General Counsel, The Hillman Company
Mr. Ayres joined The Hillman Company as associate general counsel in 1983. Prior to joining The Hillman Company, he worked as a corporate attorney with the Pittsburgh law firm of Reed Smith Shaw & McClay from 1976 to 1983. At The Hillman Company, Mr. Ayres has had responsibility for investments in a number of medical technology, healthcare and high technology companies, in addition to general legal responsibilities. Mr. Ayres serves as a member of the board of other private life science companies including Agile Therapeutics, Inc. and Replication Medical, Inc. His public company board positions have included TakeCare, Inc., Medrad, Inc., and Cellcor, Inc. Mr. Ayres received his A.B. Degree in Mathematics in 1972 from Princeton University, an M.A. in Mathematics from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1973 and a J.D. from the Harvard Law School in 1976.
Richard S. Kollender
Partner, Quaker BioVentures
Mr. Kollender joined Quaker BioVentures as a principal in early 2003. Previously, he worked at GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), where he held positions in sales, marketing and worldwide business development. During his tenure in business development, he had the opportunity to evaluate both early- and late- stage compounds for in-licensing, including the successful licensing of Abreva®, an anti-viral indicated for the treatment of cold sores. As a marketer, Mr. Kollender was a brand manager in the Oncology and Specialty Products business unit of GSK, where he had both pre-launch and post-launch product management responsibilities. In addition, he was a founding member of GSK's eMarketing Group, a unit that sought to leverage the Internet as well as other emerging technologies in the pursuit of innovative and commercially viable new marketing channels.
Mr. Kollender also served as an investment manager at S.R. One. At S.R. One, he had the opportunity to evaluate potential investment opportunities, perform due diligence, structure and negotiate investments and to work with management teams to execute their strategies following investment. He also served as an active board observer for several of the portfolio companies. Mr. Kollender began his career as a certified public accountant with KPMG Peat Marwick in Philadelphia, and spent six years in public practice. His public accounting practice included a significant emphasis on the healthcare and emerging businesses sectors. He is a member of both the American and Pennsylvania Institutes of Certified Public Accountants.
Brian M. Gallagher, Ph.D.
President and CEO, Magen Biosciences
Dr. Gallagher is President and Chief Executive Officer of Magen Biosciences, a biotechnology company focused on improving the health and appearance of human skin. Dr. Gallagher has broad industry experience, most recently as Chairman and CEO of CollaGenex Pharmaceuticals, a publicly traded dermatology, specialty pharmaceutical company. Prior to that, he was with Bristol-Myers Squibb where he held a number of executive positions, including President of Squibb Diagnostics. He also served with E.I. DuPont deNemours, where he held several research, development, marketing, and management positions. Dr. Gallagher received his B.S. from St. Louis University and his Ph.D. from St. John’s University.
W. Thomas Amick
Vice President, Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation, Retired
Tom Amick began his career with Johnson & Johnson in 1974 as a sales representative for Ortho Pharmaceutical, Inc. While at Ortho Pharmaceutical, he held various sales positions of increasing responsibility. In 1989 he was recruited to join a group charged with starting a biotechnology business within Johnson & Johnson. He advanced to the position of Vice President of the Oncology Franchise. Under his leadership, this business franchise became one of the most successful businesses in the history of Johnson & Johnson. When he left in 1999 to assume the position of President of Janssen-Ortho Inc., the Oncology Franchise was a billion dollar business growing at 131 percent. As President of Janssen-Ortho, he managed Johnson & Johnson’s entire pharmaceutical and biotechnology portfolio for Canada. When he arrived at Janssen-Ortho, the business had been flat to declining with an average growth of 6 to 8 percent. After one year under his leadership, the business was growing at 22 percent. In May 2000, he was recruited to start a biotechnology business for Johnson & Johnson in Europe. He was named President of Ortho Biotech Europe overseeing the operation of separate companies in the G-4 countries; Germany, France, Italy, and UK. In 2001, the first full year of operation, he grew this business at the rate of 32 percent. In January 2003, he returned to the U.S., and accepted the position of Vice President, Business Development, Johnson & Johnson Development Corporation, the venture investment arm of Johnson & Johnson. He remained in this position until his retirement in February, 2004. Mr. Amick serves on the Quaker BioVentures Advisory Board, is Chairman of the Board for Discovery Labs (NASDAQ:DSCO), Chairman, CEO of Aldagen, serves on the Board of Directors for Biolex and Argolyn, and is a venture partner at AM Pappas.
Ryan A. Harris
Principal, The Carlyle Group
Dr. Harris is a Principal working on U.S. venture and growth capital in the healthcare sector. He is based in San Francisco.
Prior to joining Carlyle in 2002, Dr. Harris was a consultant in the West Coast Healthcare Practice of McKinsey & Co., working with a variety of biotechnology, pharmaceutical and medical device companies on corporate, R&D and marketing strategy.
Dr. Harris holds an M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. He received an M.S. in health research and policy and B.A. in psychology from Stanford University, and attended Oxford University's Magdalen College. He has authored over 25 scientific articles in peer-reviewed publications such as JAMA, Lancet, Annals of Internal Medicine, and the Journal of Health Economics.
Dr. Harris serves as a present or former member or observer on the Board of Directors for Align Technologies, AqueSys, ConnectiCare, MedPointe Pharmaceuticals, Qualicaps, Inc., Transport Pharmaceuticals, Proteus Biomedical and NeoVista.
